Many of the folks that come to Vancouver Island are often surprised and taken back by the sheer size of the place. Vancouver Island is over 460 kilometres (286 miles) in length - almost the length of Ireland, and up to 100 kilometres (60 miles) in width. The total area is 31 284 square kilometres (12,076 square miles) and we have over 3 440 kilometres (2,136 miles) of coastline. We're about the same size as Taiwan and three quarters the size of Switzerland. So no, you can't see it all in one day! Our advice, spend a few days. And you'll see that all roads on the Island lead through Nanaimo, your perfect choice as a base for your Vancouver Island adventures.
